Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Commercial Art/Hatboro-Horsham High School senior, Maddy Maiers, is getting a head start on her career as a graphic designer while still in high school. An outstanding student at both EASTERN and Hatboro-Horsham High School, Maddy enjoys the honors classes she takes at Hatboro-Horsham High School and the career/college preparation she receives through her program at EASTERN.
Art has always been a part of her life and she has been drawing since she could first hold a pencil. Maddy’s cousin attended EASTERN’s Commercial Art program and highly recommended it. When Maddy was in tenth grade, she visited EASTERN’s Commercial Art and the Business and Technology Programs through a visit with Hatboro-Horsham High School. It was during this visit that she found that Commercial Art was right for her.
“Visit EASTERN if you are interested in preparing for college or a career now,” said Maddy. “The Commercial Art program often has college representatives come to speak with us about their programs and requirements. EASTERN prepares you for the future.”
As a junior at EASTERN, she was honored with the Creative Junior Photo Homework Award and the Outstanding Junior Sketchbook Award at EASTERN’s Award ceremony in May 2017.
Maddy is currently narrowing down her college choices. She has been offered a substantial scholarship to University of the Arts, but it is weighing her options. She would like to double major in Graphic Design and Physics. After she graduates from college, Maddy is interested in getting work experience in the graphic design field and hopes to eventually open her own business – as her father is also a small business owner.
Students in the Commercial Art program learn the value and application of their unique styles in both design and illustration. Students use industry standard software on the Macintosh platform. Software used includes Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash.
