Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2016 Commercial Art and Abington Senior High School alumna, Mariel Bria is half-way through her junior year at East Stroudsburg University where she is completing her degree in Recreation and Tourism Management. Due to her hard work and diligence, she will graduate a semester early in December of 2019. She has already secured a summer internship with Plymouth Township Parks and Recreation Department where she will assist in the planning of summer activities.
Bria chose the Commercial Art program at EASTERN after scheduling a personal tour. She had a strong interest in art, illustration in particular, and wanted to learn more about careers in the Commercial Art field. With the marketing and presentation skills she obtained through her Commercial Art program, she decided to pursue Recreation and Tourism Management in college. Although not the typical route taken by Commercial Art students, Bria felt that many of the skills she acquired were transferable to the marketing, promotions and management fields.
She has always had a love of volunteering. When she was a student at EASTERN, she represented her Commercial Art program at many recruitment activities. She volunteers for various organizations such as WAGS Rescue, Girl Scouts, the Roslyn Boys and Girls Club and Abington Senior High School’s Band. Previously, she worked at Abington Township as a Camp Counselor and eventually Head Counselor.
“If you have a career in mind and goals set, take the opportunity to come to EASTERN and see what they have to offer,” said Bria. “The education you receive can lead you to other career paths and take you further in life than you expected. Do not give up on yourself or your dreams. The only person who can get in the way of your goals – is you. Take advantage of the networking opportunities that EASTERN offers. The only objective that EASTERN teachers and staff have is to help students to achieve their dreams.”
EASTERN Commercial Art students learn the value and application of their unique styles in both design and illustration and how to use industry-standard software on the Macintosh platform. Core software includes Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Upon completion of the program, students will have a portfolio consisting of items for entry into their postsecondary school of choice.
