Student Spotlight: Office Management Student, Leslie Ramirez

LRamirezEastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Office Management/Springfield High School senior, Leslie Ramirez, is getting a head start on her career in business administration while in high school. Her goal is to work in a professional office setting in a managerial human resources position.

When Leslie was in 10th grade, her Springfield High School Guidance Counselor, Bill Shearer, asked her what she wanted to do in terms of a career. She told him she wanted to work in the business field.  Mr. Shearer informed Leslie that EASTERN had just opened a new Office Management program that would provide her with computer and communication skills, as well as the professionalism that is  required in an office setting. He also informed her of a college credit partnership with Montgomery County Community college for their Office Administration program.

Leslie is extremely involved with SkillsUSA, EASTERN’s student leadership organization. She was selected by her Office Management instructor, Erin Derby, to attend the Career and Technical Student Organization Leadership conference for the last two consecutive years. Leslie is currently the SkillsUSA Office Management Class Officer, and School-Wide SkillsUSA Secretary.

Currently, Leslie is preparing for the SkillsUSA District Competition for Employment Application Process. This competition entails completing a job application, creating a professional portfolio, and interviewing with a panel of judges. This competition will take place at Central Montco Technical High School in early February.

Through her Office Management program, Leslie works every Wednesday for EASTERN’s Human Resources Department performing mail merges, creating envelopes and labels, managing spreadsheets and the office supply list. She works regularly in Word, Access, and Excel.

“EASTERN has provided the education that I need to be successful in my future career. The things that I do and learn here are truly real-world experiences. I have the opportunity to work in an office environment and build my resume.”

After graduation from Springfield and completion of her Office Management program, she will attend Montgomery County Community College with advanced standing. After two years, she plans to matriculate to Temple University to complete her degree in Business Administration.
