Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Cosmetology/Springfield Township High School senior, Hannah Sebenick, was the first ever EASTERN student to compete in the SkillsUSA District Competition in the Esthetics category. EASTERN is proud to announce that Hannah earned the gold medal for her special effects makeup out of a total of seven competitors from other career and technical high schools.
The comprehensive competition consisted of a written test, a facial, daytime makeup application, and the final portion was the fantasy makeup application. The theme for the fantasy makeup application was “optical illusion.” With her makeup design in mind, she chose a Cosmetology classmate, Carlie Kirschen, Upper Moreland High School senior, as her model.
Knowing that her future was going to be in the arts, Hannah initially considered the Commercial Art program at EASTERN. The television show, Face Off, where special effects make-up artists participate in elaborate challenges for a grand prize, inspired her to go another artistic route. She felt that preparation for her career path would be better suited with the skills attained in Cosmetology. She still holds a strong interest in fine arts and takes advantage of all the art programs available at Springfield Township High School. Choosing Cosmetology gave her the best of both worlds.
On Halloween, the Cosmetology students participated in a special effects makeup competition. EASTERN’s Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology Instructional Aide/Skills Advisor, Tori Penecale, suggested that Hannah compete in the Esthetics SkillsUSA competition. EASTERN’s Cosmetology Instructor, Wendy Leyden, noted that she had never had a student compete for this specific competition. After seeing Hannah’s high scores in esthetics on the NOCTI test, a battery of assessments or standardized tests for students studying career and technical programs in high schools, they decided to sign Hannah up for the competition.
“I was hoping to place because I felt good about the looks I produced in the competition,” said Hannah. “I was nervous until they called my name for first place. I wouldn’t have had this amazing opportunity had I not chosen Cosmetology. I know that what I am doing now will help me achieve my future goals.”
Currently, Hannah is participating in an independent study for Springfield Township High School. Hannah is exploring artists and techniques for creating creatures. She recently completed life casts of models and next week she will begin sculpting. She is working on character design and researching mythological creatures.
Upon graduating from EASTERN and Springfield Township High School, Hannah will be attending the Coker College in South Carolina for Studio Art with a focus in Sculpture. For her career, she plans to combine Cosmetology with sculpture and the development of prosthetics for television, film and theater.
