Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Culinary Arts/Upper Moreland High School senior, Hanna Long, was chosen as one of only 25 students selected throughout the nation to participate in the Congress-Bundestag program. The Congress-Bundestag Vocational Scholarship provides an opportunity for U.S. high school graduates who have undertaken vocational training to spend their 13th year in Germany pursuing their
vocational interests. This scholarship is provided through Nacel Open Door, Inc. Nacel Open Door, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to international understanding and language education.
Hanna submitted her application for the Congress-Bundestag scholarship back in January 2017, which included several essays, transcripts from Upper Moreland High School and her career and technical program at EASTERN, passport photo, and several recommendation letters. She was selected as a semi-finalist and interviewed with the
Nacel Open Door panel in March. In April, Hanna was officially awarded the scholarship.
She will arrive in Germany in July and will begin intensive German language training in Bonn, Germany. She will then be placed with host family and given an internship in her field. She hopes to be placed in a bakery, in a hospital to continue her education in nutrition, or at a resort for hospitality management.
“I am very excited to travel and meet my host family,” said Hanna. “This will be my first time on an airplane and my first time traveling abroad. I am looking forward to meeting the other 24 students from across the U.S. that were chosen. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am grateful to my Culinary Arts Instructors for encouraging me to apply.”
After her return from Germany she plans to attend Johnson and Wales University to major in Culinary Nutrition and minor in Dietetics.
EASTERN’s Culinary Arts program enables students to acquire a variety of skills including soup and sauce preparation, preparation of meat, fish and poultry entrees, baking, kitchen sanitation, purchasing and inventory controls.
