Eastern Center for Arts and Technology’s (EASTERN) Commercial Art program focuses on graphic design, illustration and photography. Each week they have a themed homework assignment/competition that allows students to get creative with their interpretations of each theme. The theme for the current class rotation is eye.
Students need to find or take a photograph related to the theme and turn it into an illustration. Students then vote for their favorites. The winner of the competition receives bragging rights and art supplies. Rob Steinbacher, Master Photographer/Commercial Art Instructional Assistant, also enters the competition and students can earn extra points if they correctly identify his artwork.
“All of our illustration submissions were outstanding,” said Nicole Mohrey, EASTERN’s Commercial Art Instructor. “Regardless of who wins the competition, they should all be proud of their efforts. I was extremely impressed with the various interpretations on the theme and the creativity was astounding. See…homework can be fun!”
EASTERN’s Commercial Art program covers everything from conceptual drawing and design to a professional portfolio. Students learn the value and application of their unique styles in both design and illustration. Students use industry standard software on the Macintosh platform. Software used includes Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash.
