February is Black History Month. Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) is extremely proud of our Black Alum and we are celebrating by focusing on our successful grads throughout the month. Elissa Johnson, a 2019 EASTERN Construction Technology /Cheltenham High School graduate, is enjoying her second year of a four-year apprenticeship at Klover Contracting. Her apprenticeship includes on-the-job training, as well as taking classes one day a week at Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC.) Through her apprenticeship, she has helped build schools, a church, nursing homes, a police station, and worked on a project at a major local pharmaceutical company.
When Johnson was a sophomore at Cheltenham High School, she visited EASTERN to learn more about the career and technical programs for juniors and seniors. She selected Construction Technology at EASTERN because she wanted to challenge herself, and to be successful in a career path not typically occupied by black women. Her goal was to set a positive example for women, and to encourage the pursuit of a career in a field that sparks creativity and passion. While at EASTERN, Johnson was a leader in the Construction Technology class, and was selected as the November 2018 Student of the Month.
“During my time at EASTERN, I got to experience working with many different people, and I believe that prepared me for the real world,” said Johnson. “I also learned about the physical toll construction can have, and how to do things the safe way, and how to do things properly now to avoid problems in the future. I love learning. Every day I go to work ready to learn something new. Getting to experience the fast-paced atmosphere on a job site brings me so much joy. EASTERN is the best way to set yourself up for a successful life. They prepare and ease you into the real world. I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for EASTERN.”
Lay the foundation for a towering future! Get satisfaction from building projects and working with current materials used in the field to refine your construction skills. This two-year career program is the first step for students interested in pursuing a successful career in the construction field. Students will work on both residential and commercial construction in the school’s lab area. Learn more about Construction Technology at EASTERN – https://www.eastech.org/eastern-programs/con/.
